The new Weather Forecast Office in Key West was designed to be occupied during a Category 5 hurricane. Elevated seven feet above the ground, the structure is above the anticipated storm surge. Large glazed areas are engineered to withstand the wind pressure and wind blown debris generated by 165 mph winds.

Located in the center of Key West, the balloon launch facility is elevated to 45 feet above grade to allow for balloons to be launched above treetops and power lines.

The building is operational on a 24/7 basis and has complete emergency generator backup to assure operations during severe weather events.
